BUSINESS UNIT OVERVIEW


The Controllers' Technology department, whose role in general is to ensure accurate, transparent and controlled reporting to internal clients and external regulatory bodies. The group is spread across the New York, London, Tokyo and India regions. It includes a dynamic team of talented junior and senior developers, technical architects, and functional analysts who work in concert, employing agile methodologies, to deliver high profile projects using OO technology.


Controllers' Technology is part of the Technology business unit. There are a number of positions in these teams within Controllers' Technology.


 * P&L
 P&L Technology develops and maintains the P&Lsystem, which is one of the key systems in the firm, responsible for calculating the firm's "official" profit-and-loss and reporting it to a wide variety of business users, senior management, and regulators. The P&Lsystem processes all the firm's trading activity across the vast majority of product lines in the bank - everything from simple equities and bonds to complex structured derivatives, commodity products, loan products and more.
   
* Regulatory Reporting
The Regulatory Technology group supports the regulatory function.  It develops and supports several applications that deal with regulatory requirements: the firm's financial disclosures,  the firm's capital charges, and several regulatory reports. The group works very closely with other technology teams (Market Risk, Credit, Product Control, etc.) and with the user community, which actively participates in various phases of the software development process.

* Funding
 Funding Technology supports the funding controllers who are responsible for all the profit and loss reporting on secured and unsecured funding instruments, liquidity reporting, the consolidated balance sheet and balance sheet planning for the firm, and the allocation of the costs of funding back to the business units. The group has customised variants of systems that are used in the P&L and Legal Entitiesgroups as well as its own standalone systems for funding specific functions.

 Legal Entities
Legal Entities technology group is responsible for supporting the firm's financial controllers whose primary function is to safeguard the assets of the Firm and to ensure the Firm's businesses are in compliance with rules and regulations governing transactions in financial markets worldwide. Legal Entitiesis responsible for maintaining a consolidated view of the profit and loss and balance sheet across the full set of product lines from simple equity products to complex derivatives.

Tax
The primary objective of the Tax Technology group is to ensure the firm's compliance with the tax laws of those countries (and local jurisdictions) in which the firm conducts business. Technology systems are also critical in supporting other Tax functions that include providing tax information for the firm's financial statements; preparing and supervising the preparation of U.S. federal, state, local and non-U.S. tax returns for the firm as well as for Asset Management and Merchant Banking investment vehicles.



RESPONSIBILIITES

The primary responsibility will be to understand controllers' business and functional requirements and to help develop technical solutions to these. In addition the candidate will be required to gain knowledge of the existing system and product lines in order to support the system and controllers who use it.


The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a variety of challenging projects in the team, with a mix of both a functional and a technical aspects and the opportunity to learn the business from experts.

This is a developer role and candidates would expect to spend much of their time on code development activities, working with the technology teams and technical architects globally. However, the role also requires a significant amount of functional and technical analysis, working closely with the Controllers user group in order to gather requirements and produce designs. The remainder of the time would be spent on supporting new and existing applications.  In addition, candidates will be involved in first line user support.

The main technology used in the role is Java although SQL (Sybase ASE/UDB) may be required at times, and knowledge of batch scripting and C or C++ may be useful for analysis purposes. We promote the use of test-driven development and agile methodologies, so experience of working in projects run in this manner is useful. Knowledge of Object Oriented Design and Analysis is highly desirable as well. A working knowledge of ORM tools is also desirable.

SKILL / EXPERIENCE


MANDATORY

The following technical skills are considered mandatory:

    * JAVA: 1 to 5 years experience, more than that will not be considered for these positions

Working knowledge of testing frameworks such as JUnit

    * Working knowledge of Relational databases and SQL
    * Knowledge of Object Oriented Design and Development
    * Experience with middle tier / distributed environments
    * Practical and proven technical design and systems analysis skills, backed up by real-project implementation experience using Java, UI interfaces, database architecture and modelling across distributed platforms.
    * Experience of working in Unix/Linux environment
    * Experience in design and development of Java web applications using JSP, Servlets, JavaScript, XML, Tomcat, Ant
    * Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university

The successful candidate will also:

    * Demonstrate strong problem solving & analytical skills. You are hands-on and take ownership of issues to ensure follow-through; backed up by real-project implementation experience
    * Exhibit leadership qualities and strong communication skills
    * Be comfortable working with a global group that both welcomes and challenges new ideas

    * Demonstrate the ability to partner and work with clients to deliver benefit to the business

PREFERRED

 The following technical skills are desirable:

    * Unix / Linux
    * Experience with DB2 UDB / Sybase ASE
    * C or C++
    * Exposure to Fit / Fitness, QTP (Quick Test Pro)
    * Hibernate / ORM tools
    * Perl, KSH, or other scripting languages
    * Working knowledge of Autosys
    * Software development lifecycle proficiency and code management skills
    * Experience with at least one code repository such as CVS
    * Exposure to web development frameworks such as Struts, JSF, Spring
    * Exposure to BPM, knowledge of JBPM or other BPM / Workflow engines
    * Exposure to Sybase IQ
    * Knowledge of Slang


A successful candidate is also likely to have (although not necessarily):

    * Investment banking experience
    * Project management skills
    * Agile development experience
